Antifreeze is accepted as a Household Hazardous Waste due to toxicity.
Antifreeze is more toxic after it has been used in your car because it contains metals that can be poisonous if swallowed by humans or pets. Antifreeze poured down storm sewers or on the ground can threaten the quality of lakes and streams.
Handling and disposal tips
Do not:
- Pour antifreeze down storm sewers
- Let it drip onto the ground
- Flush it into septic systems
- Use it to keep ice-fishing ice free
- Mix it with oil
- Place it in the trash
- Pour down your sink - doing this will kill the "good" bacteria, which treats waste at wastewater treatment facilities
