Asbestos

Not Accepted At Hennepin County Facilities.

Asbestos removal is highly regulated.  Call the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency at (651) 296-6300 and ask for the asbestos program coordinator for help with your specific asbestos removal situation, in addition to reading their publication Commonly Asked Questions About Asbestos in the Home.   All asbestos must be disposed of at a landfill that has been approved by the MPCA to accept asbestos.  The Minnesota Department of Health, (651) 201-4620, is also a very good web site explaining asbestos, and also maintains a list of licensed asbestos contractors, as well as information on proper removal procedures.

Asbestos was used in over 3,000 products for strength, thermal insulation, acoustical insulation, and fire protection.  It can be found in some types of ceiling or floor tiles, siding, shingles or insulation.  It is harmful when the asbestos fibers are disturbed and become airborne during removal.  It is difficult to identify.  You may want to have the suspected product tested if it is not labeled.
